International Forum

Global Learning and Education at Bryn Mawr and Beyond

Thank you to the alumnae/i, students, staff, and faculty panelists who helped virtually convene the 2024 International Forum in March! Attendees registered from a dozen countries and across seven decades—from the Classes of 1951–2024. Two complementary panel discussions focused on the understanding that 21st century knowledge must come from global dialogue, and on the different modalities and spaces where learning happens. Alumnae/i, faculty, and student panelists shared reflections on their transformative international education experiences, on how globalization is impacting education at regional and local levels, and on a central consideration about what can be accomplished together that cannot be accomplished alone.

Chair and Term Professor in the Bryn Mawr/Haverford Education Department and Associate Dean for Global Engagement Alice Lesnick discussed the Laɣim Tehi Tuma “Thinking Together” internship program. The 360-inspired program invites students from Bryn Mawr, Haverford, Lincoln University and the University for Development Studies in Ghana to think together with the mission to co-create education centered by Black studies that forwards just and thriving futures. Participants in the LTT Program are seen here in Ghana.

“I didn’t know it at the time, but my whole vision and philosophy about education were shaped by Bryn Mawr. It opened my eyes to a whole greater world with a past and a future that were interconnected. And, when I went into education, I realized that’s what I wanted to give my students.” — PILAR CABEZA DE VACA ’75

“I did a winter break externship through the Career & Civic Engagement Center, and was able to sit down with several alums and talk to them about their international careers. And, that helped me to realize ‘Wow, this (abroad experience) could be an option for me!’ and to think about the classes that may prepare me. Bryn Mawr has allowed me to become good at going as deep as possible and not be fearful of asking questions.” — WHITNEY RIGODON ’24, SUMMER IES ABROAD INTERNSHIP IN VIENNA, AUSTRIA AT BIOLUTION GMBH, A LIFESCIENCES CONSULTING FIRM

“Right away, I fell into a community at Bryn Mawr that was full of people from all over that really supplements the experience of the courses you're choosing. It’s the time you spend in the dorms together, riding the train into the city. I found a really good community of people that made being at Bryn Mawr very comfortable, and also felt very much like we were challenging each other as part of our growth.” — NTSHADI MOFOKENG ’12
